Best Wishes for Success
Welcome back! Last week we discussed how strategic
communication professionals and others alike could measure success. As often
noted, this blog’s reoccurring theme has been about communication. We have
discussed many topics related to strategic communications this last term
however, I would like to highlight the ones I found most important for
success. The topics include
interpersonal influence, effective communication through leadership, and vision.
Interpersonal communication is something we do daily, and which
has a great influence over us. When we communicate with someone who is close to
us, we have the chance to influence them. Through social media platforms, word
of mouth marketing is a great tool to use for influencing others. Think back to
the example about the home-based businesses. We are much more willing to purchase
something based on the opinion of those we know versus those we do not.
Therefore, organizations can succeed by engaging and working with an opinion
leader, someone who has amassed a larger social following, to share content relevant
to the organization and its values.
Further, effective communication through leadership is often
misrepresented. One can be a successful leader without being in a leadership
position by merely communicating effectively with his employees. Team players
can step up to lead simply by utilizing good communication skills that keep the
team informed about what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen
in the future. In addition, strategic communication plays an important role within
the organization because it allows the communication professional to develop a
framework that describes how the communication activities will alight with the organization’s
goals. In other words, through effective communication, the communication professional
can verbally express their vision on how the implementation of mediums will
aide in reaching the goals set by the organization.
Moreover, vision is what separates leaders and managers. As
the words themselves entail, managers manage, and leaders lead. Communication
professionals who lead with vision produce a positive change through empowering
others. Creating a vision that motivates employees is vital for organizational
success. In fact, when employees are motivated, they become more engaged which
often manifests into workplace satisfaction. And what is more successful than
employee satisfaction?
Lastly, I started this blog to help articulate my thoughts
about communication leadership and how it is effective in social media
strategies. I hope I have been successful in accomplishing those goals. Since
this term is nearing completion, I will no longer post weekly. I will, however, intermittently post about various issues concerning the future of communication
within the digital age. Thank you for being apart of this journey. Should you
feel inclined to reach out to me, please comment below. As I have said before,
encouragement is a powerful tool. I encourage you to seek out new ways to
better communicate with your colleagues. Perhaps explore some of the topics above
or ones talked about throughout this blog. Remember, effective communication is
the key for success.
